How To Protect Fine Tween Hair From Heat Tools

Just a quick peek at worked for us – because there was no time for videos!

If you’re a tween/teen reading this post – PLEASE read through the tips at the end of this post and make sure that you’re getting hands on help from an adult! All the posts and videos in the world can’t teach how using heat tools feels and functions in real life! I am not a professional stylist. I am just a mom with many years of experience and learning.

The details of how our afternoon looked: She had a basketball game at 4, and a dance at 5! How are we supposed to pull THAT off? They were only about thirty minutes late for the dance. (full product link at end of post)

Here’s How it Went Down:

Before the game, all of things were tried on head to toe to ensure we had everything ready. Hair was completely prepped:

– Brushed out and detangled.

– Spritzed in sections with Thermal Defense from Lilla Rose as directed.

– Curled in pieces with spritzes of I Create Finish from Innersense.

– Clipped back for the game with Flexi Sport from Lilla Rose.

Game Ready Hair!

The game was over at 4:45, 6 minutes away from home. (Rec Basketball y’all, it be like that…) Coach was prepped for her to BOLT at the final buzzer.

– After the game, she did her make up & got her dressed.

– We spent about 5 minutes (probably less) refreshing a few curls.

– Daddy & Daughter we out the door, drama and tear free.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Mom’s Review: I loved extra lift we got from the thermal defense. This child doesn’t like to spend time on her hair, has a natural part, and her hair tends to paste itself to her scalp. The Thermal Defense also added a little fullness, which is hard to see without a before photo (sorry about that!) But, those of you that know me personally and what her hair usually looks like…you can see the difference. I also loved Being able to run that HOT curling iron through her hair without worrying damaging her fine strands. My favorite thing? Two days later, she has yet to wash her hair and it doesn’t feel gross and clumpy. I credit this both to the Thermal Defense and Innersense I Create Finish. If you do a lot of heat styling, or have events coming up that will require heat styling, I HIGHLY recommend the Thermal Defense! A little bit goes a LONG way!

Products used:

Lilla Rose Thermal Defense

Lilla Rose Flexi Sport

Gold ‘n Hot Curling Iron (I think mine is 1.5″? – It’s an older one!)

Innersense Organic Beauty I Create Finish

Tips for Heat Styling:

Supervise your tween or do it for them! We don’t want any scorched hair…or worse…hair burned off, scalp burns, etc. Show them how to handle the iron. Talk them through what you are doing, so that these things are in their head when they experiment on their own. ➰ Hair holds curl from heat tools better when it’s a little bit dirty. This adds texture and ‘grip.’ If you must start with clean hair, consider using a texturizing spray or sea salt spray. You an also add gel to wet or damp hair, or hair spray to damp or dry hair.

➰ When using heat tools, stay focused. Don’t leave the heat directly on the hair too long, especially with extra hot tools. I sing the old Sesame street counting tune to know it’s time to pull the iron out (one two three four fine, six seven eight nine ten, eleven…tweeeeeelvve… Remember that one?). 10-15 seconds is long enough.

➰ Don’t disturb, manipulate, or otherwise alter the curls until they are completely cool! Seriously. No matter how TOO MUCH curl it is – don’t touch it yet! Leave it alone!

➰ Spritz the curl with a finishing spray after removing the curling iron. (I spray before, during, and after! This is a trick I picked up years ago from a stylist friend – and it never fails me.)

➰Remember, you can always refresh or redo a curl in a different direction.

Coming Soon: I am working on a list of place where you can shop for party dresses for your tween – who knew how hard that was going to be??? Be sure to subsribe, below, to #WearItWedensday to make sure you don’t miss that post!
