What do you remember the most?

The day that forever shook America. September 11.

My story is pretty boring…so please, find others that are more significant…

I remember walking into Wal-mart, of all places. I passed a stranger (I can still oddly remember the expression on their face, and their eyes), who said ‘a plane just hit the World Trade Center’.

Now, listen, I was in my mid twenties…and a single parent…and a teacher…the World Trade Center had zero significance in my every day life…but still…I was confused by what this stranger said…it made no sense…these things don’t just happen…and, yes, even then, I knew that ‘news’ wasn’t always news. So, I shook it off and kept walking…

Only to look up at a TV screen when I walked in the store to watch the second plane hit…there was no other sound in the store. Probably the first and only time I’ve ever heard silence in a Wal-mart.

On the radio, news. Updates. The Pentagon. The World Trade Center. And Pennsylvania.

Of course, we would learn more later about the who, what, why. About the intentions…about the heros. About the losses. The casualties. The aftermath.

That child I was buying diapers for has yet to live in a country without War. Without extra security. With peace.

What’s important to remember?

The Hope.

The Unity.

The Heroes.

The Innocent lives lost.

The families, lives, crews, companies, impacted.

Our nation.

Our nation united in a way that was eerily silent and calm. Like we were just waiting to pounce. Like we were just waiting for someone else to pounce. Daring them. Because we wouldn’t just sit there. We were all the same. We were all hit. We were all impacted, too many so, so, so much more than those of watching on a television screen. Read that again…we were all the same.

Let’s remember the hope and unity that this horrific day brought to our nation. Teach our children that part along with the history and significance of the events. And live it out for the remainder of our days in honor of those lost, in honor of our first responders. In honor of our nation.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
