Why We Must Care for New & Expectant Mothers

By Design, the Rooster Crows

Have you ever been up early enough, or stayed up late enough, to hear the rooster crow? It’s still dark outside. On a clear night, you can still see the stars. The Rooster Crows to wake the farmer. My thoughts are that it allows the farmer time to wake, have some breakfast, prepare his/her work for the day, and spend some time in the Word before s/he heads out for the day. A few moments of silence, peace, and clarity.

In such a way, the Rooster protects the farmer...from oversleeping, from missing those moments, from a potentially devastating day. Of course, now we have alarm clocks, cell phone alerts, smart devices…but none so reliable as the Rooster.

Only in the darkness can you see the stars.

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.

I often ponder on the intricacies of nature, and how they are designed to work for our good…in our favor, for our protection, sometimes in unexpected ways:

  • The River Flows
  • The Sun Shines
  • The Rains Come
  • Organic Matter Decomposes
  • Bees Scatter Pollen
  • Snow Insulates
  • Seeds Mature
  • A Mother’s Breast Creates Nourishment
  • The Womb Surrounds the Embryo

As the most pure and innocent form of life grows in the womb, it is our responsibility to protect and nurture them, whether it is in our womb, or that of another woman. We are commanded to love our neighbors. To carry one another’s burdens. To care for widows and orphans. To be the hands and feet of Christ…and yet, we so often neglect to even consider the most venerable, unless they are a member of our family.

How can we protect a child in utero if it’s not our womb?

  • Help to meet the physical and emotional needs of pregnant mothers, their partners, and families.
  • Support women throughout the pregnancy and beyond so that they do not feel alone in their journey, and know that they truly do have a village of support. This is especially important for unplanned, and potentially unwanted, pregnancies.
  • Be aware of local resources and agencies that can provide assistance with financial needs, emotional needs, physical needs, and nourishment so that the pregnancy can be carried to term safely whenever possible.
  • Avoid judgement or apathy towards ANY pregnancy, planned or otherwise.
We are the village.

Abraham Maslow provided us with the theory of self-actualization. Five Basic Human Needs. It’s a hierchy: physiological, safety, love & belonging, esteem, and, finally, self-actuallulization. In theory, in order to reap the benefits of one, the previous needs must first be met. In reality, these needs often overlap and fulfilling them can intertwine.

It is as necessary for man to live in beauty rather than ugliness as it is necessary for him to have food for an aching belly or rest for a weary body.

Yesterday, I shared with you some fun ideas for hair care related push presents as well as how you can support new and expectant mothers in need. Of course, if you’re loving on a mother in need, you’ll want to ensure that her physical, medical, and safety needs are met – I always find it nice to sprinkle in a little bit of love & belonging while working on those needs…sometimes, just that someone thought about her can make all the difference in the world. Check out that post right here:

May His blessings ever shine on you!
