How you can support a Little Free Library near you…

Supporting your local Little Free Library is simple! Most of the information below is basic common sense, and courtesy. You’ll also find some very helpful links to supporting the Little Free Library Organization as a whole.

  • Many LFL Stewards accept donations of books – you may want to reach out to them individually to assess the need and what types of books they may be looking for to enhance their location. If you know the address of the steward, you can order books and have them shippped directly from the Little Free Library, or businesses that support the LFL. You can find a link to those businesses online here.
  • Make sure that the books you donate are current and in great condition. If they are outdated, overly worn, etc…this can just create more work for your steward.
    • Quality young adult books are always the most difficult to come by!
    • Board books and quality children’s books are always helpful and encourage excitement in young readers.
    • If you have multiple copies of the same book to donate, consider reaching out to the steward to see if they’d like them all in the library at the same time, or if they’d like to hold on to the extras to distribute at a later date.
  • Some LFL may accept monetary donations for book purchases, but you may be more comfortable making a donation to the Little Free Library Organization. This will ensure that LFL’s in areas that need more books and support receive assistance. You can also give in honor or memory of a loved one. You can also receive a receipt from the Little Free Library Organization to use for tax purposes.
  • Spread the word! If you local little free library has a social media account, or dedicated web site/blog, share that! More patrons mean more readers, and more natural book circulation.
  • There are lots of little things that Library Stewards do to enhance, maintain and protect their library and books…including stamps, book marks, weather proofing, flowers, benches, repairs, etc. These things cost money…the cost can minimal, but can get pricey at times, especially in areas where vandalism and theft may be more of an issue. If you can offer products or services to your local stewards, I’m sure they would appreciate it. I know we’d love to have flowers and a bench next to ours, and plan to do that soon. It’s more an issue of time for us than finances, but of course we won’t turn down assistance!
  • Sign the guest book, if they have one! Little notes of encouragement and simply knowing that their library is being utilized and appreciated goes a long way in keeping a steward motivated to maintain their library.
  • Send a book related thank you gift to your steward! Maybe a new release in a genre they love? Or a little something from the Little Free Library Shop. Click here to see our personal wish list for some ideas!
  • If you borrow books, and are able, leave some in return! Even if that’s during future visit!
  • Be respectful of surrounding areas and personal property. I think this one goes without saying.
