Simple DIY Upcycled Essential Oil Storage

I’m a sucker for a great upcycle and this was a fun and MUCH needed project! Although, I must say…I only had the idea and did the shopping…

My husband was kind enough to put it all together for me. Yes, I’m perfectly capable…but…ya know…I’d rather not...

We’ve had this fabulous ‘Cheers’ Dartboard for several years… I can’t actually recall where we got it…but, of course, I fell instantly in love with it. If you’re of a certain age, then you understand the nostalgia of it…and of course, you know the song, right?

We once used it for keys, etc…that worked great! But, then we remodeled, and it didn’t quite fit the new space anywhere that it might actually be used. So, it went on the wall in the den and became cord storage…but, even that was not utilized…

Enter my sweet friend who moved a little further south, much to my dismay….but, alas…she cleaned out her oils and I was lucky enough to inherit MANY, MANY bottles of oils that she would not be using (aren’t I such a great friend?)

So, I had the idea to put them here…the jumbled bin they were in made it quite frustrating to dig through and find that one oil I wanted, especially if someone was ill or hurting.

And, so, I started the search for something that would fit. Finding a few simple options…I landed on the one below. It has great reviews, the measurements are perfect, it’s adjustable in that it is actually six separate, unattached shelves, it has endcaps to keep things from spilling off the ends, AND it came with the necessary hardware (aka, my husband wouldn’t have dig through his stash to find just the right mounting hardware.) And, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality once it arrived.

Now, in the pictures, you’ll see that there’s a pegboard in the back of our dartboard. You can ignore that…that was from a former use, and is completely irrelevant. We just chose to not removed it.

The shelves were placed so that I could easily see, sort, and grab oils. As you can see, we only used five of them.

What happens when hubby reads your blog…

The bottom shelf was turned backwards. We tried something here that didn’t work – I’ll save you the trouble: My husband tried to screw through the slots for the endcaps so that we could place the shorter ‘front’ side of the shelf where it was facing the inside/back of the unit. This was to ensure that I had one shelf with a taller front for those taller bottles and odd sized items. This cracked the acrylic. The slot was too close to the edge. Luckily, we had an extra…he ended up drilling holes in the acrylic and placing this shelf on the bottom of the inside of the dartboard, and screwed through the drilled holes. That worked perfectly!

edit #2 after hubby proofreads what you are writing about his projects…

The only thing I want to add is some sort of light…I may just add a string of battery powered lights. What can I say? My eyes are getting old!

Now I have the perfect, eye level spot for all my oils, and they’re even alphabetized! LOVING IT!

Update! This guy full of puns on TikTok upcycled a wash board as a spice rack! So, I just had to duet him! Check it out below!

Let me know if you try it, or have some other creative solutions for storing your oils! One thing I’d love to know…how do you hide that big jug of water? I’m considering a decorative ceramic pitcher for that…
