Where to Put Your Little Free Library Guest Book

little free library guest book

A frequently asked question is whether or not a guestbook should be installed in a Little Free Library and the answers are as varied as LFL locations and stewards themselves!

You really have to consider your community, who your typical patrons are, your LFL location, and, of course, whether or not you actually care to have one or not.

I thought I didn’t want one, until one of our patrons left this sweet note in our library. It was so encouraging and thoughtful, well. Here we are…with a guestbook.

We are in a quite, suburban neighborhood and don’t have much, if any, outside traffic to our little free library. So, I’m not terribly concerned about theft. I went with the Official Little Free Library Guestbook, and did decide I wanted it attached. If it gets stolen, I’ll go with something I wouldn’t mind loosing. So, I tied on the paracord and handed it to my husband to finish the job (that’s the arrangement…).

He had a shelf left over from our Dartboard Oily shelf, and decided to attach that to the inside side wall of our LFL to hold the guestbook.

I could not be more thrilled! I wasn’t quite sure where or how to place it. This gets it out of the way, and yet IN SIGHT for patrons! LOVE IT! What do you think?

This is the shelf we used: https://amzn.to/33pmoL4

He used the shelf that we cracked during the installation of the Dartboard Oil shelves and wanted to make sure I shared with the following:

  • The acrylic was cracked, and was ‘brittle’ in his words, aka easy to crack when he was cutting it.
  • It was a clean break, so we was able to saw the shelf in half and face the rough edge towards the back of the Library.
  • Just take care if you need to drill through or cut this particular shelf.
  • This could easily be done with wood, or other materials. He used this because it was on hand and perfect for the project.

So, bottom line:

  • Only you can decide if you want a guest book. It can be lots of fun, but certainly isn’t necessary.
  • Placement can be a challenge, and I hope this idea my husband came up with helps you!
  • I would recommend attaching your book to your library in some way to avoid someone accidentally taking it home.
  • I stamped the inside of our guest book, and wrote a little note on the inside cover.
  • If this one gets filled up without incident, I will purchase another from the Official Little Free Library Shop. It’s a very nice book, sturdy and will make a nice keepsake!

Enjoy your Little Free Library, have fun with it and make it yours! It’s lots of fun to personalize and interact with, but very much ok to just sit back and enjoy!
