I’ve seen it all – the stuff that lasts, the stuff that doesn’t last through day one, the stuff I wish I’d known existed before I bought the other thing, the stuff I ended up buying anyway – even though I already bought the other thing.

Why We Must Care for New & Expectant Mothers

By Design, the Rooster Crows

Have you ever been up early enough, or stayed up late enough, to hear the rooster crow? It’s still dark outside. On a clear night, you can still see the stars. The Rooster Crows to wake the farmer. My thoughts are that it allows the farmer time to wake, have some breakfast, prepare his/her work for the day, and spend some time in the Word before s/he heads out for the day. A few moments of silence, peace, and clarity.

In such a way, the Rooster protects the farmer...from oversleeping, from missing those moments, from a potentially devastating day. Of course, now we have alarm clocks, cell phone alerts, smart devices…but none so reliable as the Rooster.

Only in the darkness can you see the stars.

Ultimate Hair Care Push Presents for New & Expectant Mothers

I’m not a part of the generation that received push presents…seriously…if baby Daddy remembered to bring flowers to the hospital, we were doing good…but, apparently it’s a thing now.
Let’s talk about that!

I know. We’re a little off topic from our normal Thursday curly hair topics – but, curly girls have babies, too…so, here we are.

Whether you’re the baby daddy, partner, a family member, or a bestie, you might be considering getting a personal gift or ‘push present’ for a new or or expectant mother. By personal gift, I mean something for HER, not for the baby or the family. It’s VERY easy to get lost in the baby and forget to take care of mom. And for mom to think more about her growing family than herself. My birthday gift when I was pregnant with my first child was one of those atrociously huge circular stand in play gym thing-a-ma-bobs for…the baby…While I VERY MUCH appreciated this gift, which was very elaborate at the time and I would not have been able to purchase myself, it was not for ME…it was for my child.

One of the things we often neglect the most as mothers is showers – and, if we do manage that, we might not quite get to our hair, especially if it is long. For today’s #ThirstyThursday post, I’m going to share with you some items that I love that you could purchase individually or combine into a hair care gift basket. At the end of the post, we’ll talk about how you can give to new & expectant mothers in need either through your time, finances, physical gifts, or prayer. Tomorrow, we’ll discuss the importance of supporting other women during these times.

Take the Leap…Even it’s Just One Tiny Hop.

My (adult) life history wrapped up in a few sentences:

I got a degree in education.

I became a teacher.

I got married, then divorced.

I started a business with my father.

I bought a house.

I had a baby.

I focused on above business & baby.

I taught the teachers.

I got married and moved.

I had another baby.

It’s rare that we get all three children in a picture together…so, we have a tradition of taking an Easter Selfie. This one is a few years old, but one of my favorites!

I moved again.

I closed the business.

I had another baby.

I earned a little income from a hobby.

I took care of someone else’s children

I got a part time gig job.

I bought a Upin.

I’m finally doing what I’m supposed to do.

Wait, what?

Without all the details, or the childhood backstory, or the what, where, when, who, why… those are just headlines…and, though significant, they don’t really tell the whole story.

Eventually, I’ll tell you the whole story. I have to work through one part of it myself first…the toughest part…but, probably the foundation to the entire story.

The short version is this:

When I was a child, I wanted to be a mother…and then, I wanted to be a teacher…not because I was inspired by my mother or the amazing teachers in my life (and there were MANY amazing teachers in my life), but because I saw firsthand the damage that could be done, and the love that could be undone, when a person working with children used that role to tear them down instead of lifting them up.

I’ve always had a passion for teaching, and not always children. The fun part that was only realized in recent years is that there is learning to be had and teaching to be done in EVERY aspect of our lives. I thought it was funny and coincidental that I always seemed to land in a teaching role in the oddest situations. But, I’ve come to realize that it’s not a coincidence. It’s what I do. It’s in my very core. It’s where God leads me every single time.

I didn’t choose to share hair accessories with the world to make money – I chose it because I wanted to teach every single person out there they didn’t have to destroy or cut or spend hundreds of dollars on accessories, treatments and products to have great hair! Yes, it has exploded into so much more than I could have ever imagined…and I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

Through that role, I am able to teach women about their hair, about styling, about business strategies, about loving themselves, about loving God, about parenting, about technology and social media…the possibilities, literally, are ENDLESS! And it makes my very soul so awake!

Looking back, looking ahead.

It’s June – we are halfway through 2021. At the beginning of the year, I set some goals for myself, and for my business. This month, we’re going to look back at those goals and evaluate where we are and where we still need to go. We are going to do that without judgement or remorse…we are going to look at and find the positives and focus on what we’ve accomplished, how far we’ve come. I can honestly say to you today, that my personal, spiritual, and business life is VERY different that it was just six short months ago.

What made the difference?

Where ever He Leads, I’ll go.

God said go, and I went. I stepped out in blind faith and did the things. I made small, tiny decisions each and every day to do BETTER than the day before. That led to bigger decisions and more confidence, and an ever growing faith that I am, in fact on the right path. He has also put things in front of me, presently, that are a little scary and overwhelming…and the funny thing? I CANNOT WAIT to dive into them and see where they lead. Because NOT going…not doing…is to do…nothing…and always wonder about the what ifs.

So, my dear friends…put your hair up…let’s see those Messy Buns in action! Take that step…even if it is so tiny you think it insignificant or inconsequential…you just might change your world…or the entire world…

Put your hair up…let’s see those Messy Buns in action!

We got tackled this weekend…now it’s time to tackle summer…

It’s been a really strange start to summer…but we’re loving it…

With the pleasant surprise of school letting out a week early, and my husband off work for the week, we enjoyed a very extended holiday weekend. We had the absolute HONOR of hosting our friend’s dog (well, her son’s dog) while she and the rest of the family visited her son in Texas, where he is stationed. I can think of no better way to spend Memorial Day, honoring those we’ve lost, than caring for his beautiful furry friend. Check out the video below to see how much fun Skye and our dogs had this weekend. Can you guess which one is the guest?
